On the river of “faith”

How do you confront poverty, isolation and spiritual emptiness in a place that can only be reached by boat? At the beginning of April, I traveled with Priscille, a young employee from the dry Sertão, to the hot and humid Amazon region – a green wonder, full of life and challenges. The ProRIBEIRINHO team, which works holistically among the river dwellers there, was waiting for us: with God’s word, practical know-how and an open heart, they want to serve the people holistically.

We accompanied them on the Pacajá River to a small church. For three days, we lived with the team on the boat, exchanged ideas, celebrated church services, learned and prayed together. What was particularly moving was the enthusiasm with which the employees shared their faith, listened to people and strengthened local (lay) pastors.

One highlight was the mini-workshop in which Priscille presented the “storytelling” method: Bible stories are told instead of read – a help for many Ribeirinhos who cannot read. On Sunday, team leader Daniel used this method in the church. God’s word became alive, tangible and effective.

Something is also changing economically: Pastor Reginaldo told us about Juvenil, a young man whom he motivated to start fish farming. Juvenil will soon be able to sell his first catch – a glimmer of hope for him and his family.

What touched me deeply: The faith of these people grows in the midst of everyday life, on the water, in the face of adversity – and becomes a blessing for others.
